smart motors has attended the Value-driven smart maintenance workshops organised by SBB CFF FFS

Posted by smart motors on Jun 25, 2018 3:08:35 PM
Condition monitoring offers nearly unlimited possibilities to the railway sector in terms of improvement availability through real time data access and streamline maintenance costs thanks to condition based methods implementation. This sounds very positive but, on the opposite, the large list of potential benefits can complicate the implementation of a monitoring project.

It is a provider's responsibility to show and to clarify to costumers the benefits of this cultural change. For many operators this is a crucial aspect, as it has been shown in the workshops organized by the SBB CFF FFS last Friday in Zurich. A big representation of Swiss companies and from other European countries presented their reflections and experiences regarding this topic, specially regarding the key specifications called to be the foundations of future solutions in this field.

Intelis, our Swiss partner, and smart motors® suggested as a key task prior to any project, to settle an accepted level of expectations. This means to clearly separate the proved performance of the tool shown in previous implementations (its maturity) and other expected capabilities. As partners, operator and provider have to define a realistic strategy to ensure quick wins but also long term wins. From our experience, it is also important to emphasize the role of Reporting and support service in the service chain.

We strongly recommend initiatives like this one to lead the evolution of solutions on Digitization. We must work so that Condition monitoring, Big Data and statistical event prediction are as beneficial as in the industrial sectors more advanced in their use, in which today it would be unimaginable work without them.

New passenger information screen to improve passenger experience

Posted by smart motors on Jun 21, 2018 1:10:14 PM
Digital Train® provides numerous advantages to the operator, who can instantly access real time information and use in complicated decision-making processes.

Furthermore, by means of the functionality of Passenger counting, the operator knows the carriage occupation at any moment on any line, which allows analysis of how supply matches demand, in the present and in the future. In addition, the operator can monitor and analyse passenger comfort in real time: temperature, overcrowding, noise, reduced mobility access or mobile coverage.
However, the operator is not the only one who can take advantage of this data, but the users will also benefit, as shown in this example of the platform screens.

With Digital Train® technology it will be possible to design new station screens with all the relevant information shown in the image. Applying this new functionality of Digital Train® to the platform panels, the user can see not only when the next train will pass, but also know if the carriages are overcrowded, their temperature, and which carriage or carriages are reduced mobility adapted.

171 metro units monitored with Digital Train in 2020

Posted by smart motors on Feb 26, 2018 4:05:39 PM
Via Libre (www.vialibre-ffe.com), one of the most read Spanish magazines with technical and informative content aimed at the railway sector, has dedicated an article to our solution for monitoring rolling stock. (Link to the new)

The article describes the objectives of the 'Digital Train' implementation in 171 trains operated by TMB in the horizon 2020. This project takes place following the Digitalisation tendency which TMB started in 2009, and that will continue by adding new solutions for new assets monitoring.

As well as the main objectives of the solution, aiming to provide real-time data access and historical registers to feed a new maitenance system based in the asset condition, the article enphasizes transversal functionalities provided by the solution.

As an example, throug digital train it will be possible to calculate the number of passengers in each train. This information allows to draw the demand profiles of each station, which results in necessary information to plan and improve the service offer.

Another example is to track passenger experience, thanks to the % of train occupation, the temperature, if the lighting and doors systems works correctly, among others.

Other uses: finally, the system can receive measurements of energy consumption as well as alarms of signalling or infrastructure elements along the whole network, together with positioning information. Thanks to the fact that the hardware on-board is geolocalised, all the information received is also geolocalised.

Rolling stock monitoring solution in Press

Posted by smart motors on Feb 19, 2018 3:19:48 PM
This month smart motors is one of the protagonists of the TMB news web with the rolling stock monitoring project that we are implementing in Barcelona Metro. (Link to the new)

The news entitled 'Metro de Barcelona innovates with an advanced solution for train telemonitoring', reflects the interest of this operator in recovering the information that circulates through the communication system of the train units.

Metro de Barcelona began a process of digitalization of its assets 10 years ago in order to access real-time information and to be able to respond more quickly to incidents. Having a database with information on the operation of its most critical elements has allowed the operator to optimize maintenance costs and improve operation KPI. Thanks to the solution for point machines in the period 2009-2016, the cost of maintenance by point machine has decreased by 65% despite the fact that the total number of point machines in the network has increased by 67%. The total annual stoppage time due to breakdowns in those elements has also been drastically reduced, by 83.5% up to 27 minutes (2016).

After the point machine monitoring success as well as other signaling elements, this solution is being implemented in other sensitive rail operator areas, such as the rolling stock management. smart motors (R) won the project after participating in a contest at the beginning of 2017. As usual in our collaborations with clients, a tailored project to the needs of Metro de Barcelona has been carried out.

As mentioned in the article, the purpose of the project is double. First, to be able to obtain the failure tendencies of the systems on-board the rolling stock. The system is prepared so that, once enough historical data is available, artificial intelligence provides specific failure trends per element and usage parameters. The ultimate goal is to migrate from traditional preventive maintenance to condition based maintenance.

Secondly, the diversity and complexity of these systems highlights the urgency and practicality of real-time access to their situation in real-time, which inevitably improves resolution times in the event of an incident.

Finally, the article offers some details about the data visualization application. For the users it is a very relevant criterion when evaluating their satisfaction, beyond the power of the tool. For this reason, from smart motors® we prioritize the design of the structure of the Front-end, the possibilities of creating new graphs and tables, the customization to the types of trains used by the client, the incorporation of filters, etc. The contents of the interface are oriented to the needs of the customer, are easy to configure by the user and very intuitive.

New Smart Level Crossing in Switzerland

Posted by smart motors on Feb 1, 2018 2:38:59 PM
smart motors® collaborates in Switzerland in the installation of a new smart Level Crossing with the objective of improving the maintenance management.

In the frame of the collaboration between Intelis and smart motors®, it has been developed a new monitoring system for level crossing. This new system will be tested in a level crossing maintained by Intelis in Gland, Switzerland, in a rail line owned by SBB CFF FFS.

Level crossings are elements that generate insecurity and that receive an important effort on the part of the operator to avoid situations of insecurity and prevent accidents. In certain geographies, such as Spain, level crossings are being suppressed, but in others, such as Switzerland, the number of level crossings in relation to kilometers of tracks is still important (approximately 4300 ut). The solution designed by Intelis and smart motors® provides information to prevent breakdowns, aiming to optimize and rationalize maintenance costs as well as to prevent dangerous situations.

This solution, in addition to those already available in the smart motors® portfolio, focuses on real-time monitoring of the asset's status. In a second stage, that will be ready within a few months, a Front-End data visualization will be created. Also it will be provided with an artificial intelligence for the identification of failure trends of each element, information that will contribute to settle condition based maintenance calendars.

This smart Level Crossing offers a wide range of possibilities of data measured, digital and analogical inputs. In the pilot test, information regarding batteries, traffic signals, the programmable automat, axis countlers, among other, is included.

The know-how of smart motors® in this type of tools has made it possible to create a solution that adapts to different configurations of level crossings, suchs as: acoustic signals, light signals, barriers, track circuits, video cameras, axle counters, etc.
